Ursula Hall Lauderdale (Mrs. Edward Seay Lauderdale, Ursula Lauderdale Rahl), 1872-1968, was born in Moberly, Missouri. Hers was a multi-faceted art career as painter, designer, wood carver, teacher and lecturer. Lauderdale was educated there at St. Mary's Academy and the Goetz Conservatory of Music as well as later at the Warren Institute and Texas Wesleyan College, Fort Worth.

In New York City, she attended the Art Students League, Sargent School of Dramatic Art, and the Metropolitan Arts Studio. Lauderdale's teachers at the various institutions included Robert Henri, Michel Jacobs, William DeVol, and Maurice Braun. In Texas, Lauderdale studied with Frank Reaugh, and, as late as 1935, with Clara Dueri at the Witte Memorial Museum art school, in San Antonio.

Lauderdale's teaching experience includes five years in a Dallas art school; Southwestern Chautauqua, Las Vegas, New Mexico, during the summers of 1926, 1927; Trinity University, Waxahachie, Texas, starting in 1928. In 1923, she was in Wichita Falls as director of art exhibits at the Texas-Oklahoma Fair. She spent the summer of 1926 at a ranch painting near the hermit Mountains in New Mexico. A study painted there, "Indian Wild Flowers," was exhibited in Santa Fe and Dallas. She created a stained-glass window for the City Temple, in Dallas, which was installed in 1917.

Lauderdale moved to San Antonio in 1935, where she died in 1968.

Ursula Lauderdale was a member of the American Artists Professional League; American Federation of Arts; Dallas Art Association; Dallas Woman's Forum; Fort Worth Art Association; Frank Reaugh Art Club, Dallas; San Antonio Palette and Chisel Club; Society of Independent Artists; Southern States Art League; and Texas Fine Arts Association. Ten watercolors by Lauderdale are in collection of the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.


Exhibition venues included Grand Central Art Galleries in New York, the Annual Texas Artists Exhibition, and the San Antonio Art League.
