Virgilio Ripari was born in Asola (or perhaps Bozzolo) in the Province of Mantua, Lombardy, Italy in 1843. He had a hard life growing up in Asola. Andrea Terzi, the mayor, recognized his great aptitude for painting. It was due to Terzi’s patronage and generosity that Ripari was able to attend the Academia di Belle Arti di Brera in Milan. There he honed his artistic talents under such great teachers as Giuseppe Bertini and Raffaele Casnedi.
