A painter and illustrator, not to be confused with the photographer William Herman Rau (1855-1920), William Rau was born in 1874 in New York City. He exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago (1907-1911), the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (1913), and the Society of Independent Artists 1917.
