This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Born in Carson City, Nevada on January 22, 1872, the daughter of an itinerant photographer.  Winifred often accompanied her father on trips to Nevada City where she discovered a world of beauty in the culture being generated from the money of the Comstock silver mines.  She bought her first box of oil paints there and decided to become a portrait painter.   After studying at the School of Design in San Francisco, she had further training at the Boston School of Fine Arts and in European art centers.  She was often on the move following portrait commissions.

During her long career she painted many of the distinguished men and women who helped shape the intellectual pattern of their age: Albert Einstein, the poet Edwin Markham, Thomas Mann, Phoebe Hearst, Mrs. Herbert Hoover, David S. Jordan (Pres. of Stanford University) and professors at Harvard, UCLA, and Columbia. After marrying college professor Henry Rieber in 1890, she and her husband were at Harvard University until 1903.  She then moved to Berkeley where her husband joined the faculty at UC.   In 1921 they moved to southern California where he became first dean of the College of Arts & Sciences at UCLA.   In 1948 Mrs. Rieber returned to Berkeley where she remained until shortly before her death in a rest home in Sonoma, CA on Jan. 25, 1963.

Exh: Vickery, Atkins & Torrey Gallery (SF), 1913 (solo); UCLA, 1924 (solo). In: Rieber Hall, UCLA (portait of her husband); Mills College; Stanford, Columbia, Northwestern, and Atlanta Universities; Boston Unitarian Society.
