Primarily known for his realist portraits of Communist rulers and parade portraits, often painted from photographs. Shilov was born in Moscow on October 6, 1943. From 1968 to 1973, he studied at the Surikov Moscow Art Institute, and became a member of the Union of Artists in the USSR in 1976. A favorite of the government, he became People's Artist of the USSR in 1985, and in 1992, one of the Russian discovered asteroids was named after him.
Alexander Shilov is a full member of the Russian Academy of Art since 2001.
