The son of portraitist Thomas Sully, Alfred Sully was an amateur watercolorist who was born in Philadelphia. He became chief quartermaster of the U.S. troops at Monterey in April 1849 to 1853, after California came under American jurisdiction (1847).

Sully created a number of watercolor and some oil paintings reflecting the social life of Monterey during that period. He married into a local family, and it was apparent from his paintings that the locals, called Californios, maintained the (showing 500 of 2800 characters).
