Alfredo Santos (b. August 14, 1927, San Diego-)
In 1951, a 24 years old Alfredo Santos arrived at San Quentin Prison and was taken to the convalescent wing because of a leg infection. He stayed in convalescent cells his entire prison stay, reading voraciously and focusing on his art by drawing portraits of other inmates and their families (from photographs). In 1953, he submitted the winning sketch in a competition among the inmates to paint a mural on one side of a dining hal (showing 500 of 4515 characters). |
