This biography from the Archives of AskART:
| Alicia Sotherland creates painterly expressive portraits of down to earth people she finds while wandering the streets near her home in Escondido, California or attending Scottish festivals with her husband. Sotherland, a self-taught artist, occasionally works from a live model, especially when she is teaching a workshop or giving a demonstration, but she prefers to paints from photographs so she can be freer to make changes to her subject to enhance her painting.
Sotherland, who paints in pastel and watercolor, works from her home, often sitting on the floor in her living room with her board on her lap. She is a member of the San Diego Art Institute and the Rancho Santa Fe Art Association. Sotherland is also a teacher at the San Clemente Art Association.
