Biography from AskART:
| Allen Say was born in Japan in 1937. During War World II his family was forced to move frequently; he attended seven different grade schools. After the War, Say's parents divorced, and he was sent to live with his grandmother.
Allen and his grandmother did not get along and at the age of twelve Allen moved into his own apartment paid for by his grandmother. During this time Allen began working as an apprentice to a well known Japanese cartoonist named Noro Shinpei. The two became good friends.
When he was sixteen Allen Say moved to California to live with his father who had resettled there. Say developed an interest in photography and began a career as a photographer. He continued drawing and painting and soon began writing and illustrating his own children's books based on his childhood memories.
