An academic painter of Arcadian and Classical themes, Lydia Amanda Brewster Sewell studied in New York City with William Merritt Chase and William Sartain at the Art Students League. She also studied in Paris, France with William Bouguereau, Charles Emile Carolus-Duran and Tony Robert-Fleury at the Academie Julian. Sewell's career was based in New York City, where she was elected an Associate of the National Academy of Design in 1903.
