Anthony Carey Stannus was born in Carrickfergus, Co. Antrim. He entered the Government School of Design, Belfast in 1850 and later attended the Training School for Masters in London. He worked as an art master in Dowlais, Wales which opened in 1855 and was known for its large Irish population. During his career Stannus executed a number of commissions for the local history department at the Ulster Museum.
