This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Antonio (Anthony) Scilipoti was born in 1884 in a small village outside Palermo, Sicily. In 1892, in the midst of Italian immigration to the Untied States, the Scilipoti family, including 8 year old Antonio and his brother Michael came to America and settled in the Little Italy section of Manhattan. He attended the New York City school system.

Later Antonio was accepted into New York's prestigious Cooper Union School of Art. At that time, there was a great need for etchers and photoengravers to fill the hundreds of jobs being offered by magazines, books and newspaper publishers. Great pressure was brought to bear on schools such as Cooper Union to produce etchers and Scilipoti was one of those who was pushed in this direction.

Following completion of his studies, Scilipoti quickly found good employment in the city's photoengraving shops. Now in his 20's, met and married Brooklyn-born Rosa Greco. They were married shortly after meeting and settled into married life in Manhattan. They were not blessed with children. In 1921, Antonio found better employment as an etcher and color photoengraver and a better life in the countryside of Towaco (Morris County),New Jersey.

Over the years, Antonio continued to improve his easel painting skills which had taken a back-seat to his etching and photoengraving livelihood since his Cooper Union days. He was a member of the Morris County Art Society, exhibiting and selling his oil paintings at the numerous shows of that very active arts group. His summer vacations were also devoted to art and he and Rosa would travel to the Cape Ann, Massachusetts area, primarily to the Rockport Art Colony at Bearskin Neck where Antonio took formal art instruction, probably at the Aldro T. Hibbard School which dominated the art colony. Many of his paintings reflect the influences of the Rockport and New England coastal area.

Antonio and Rosa also made many trips back to the old country and during this period he and his wife became good friends with noted Venetian painter Gennaro Favai and his wife. One of these trip was in 1956. It is not known if Scilipoti studied with Favai, who was a Fellow of the Society Nationale des Beaux-Arts, but it was apparent that there was an exchange of art ideas and the Italian artist's thoughts and style were an influence on Scilipoti. Antonio Scilipoti died January 2, 1967 at Riverside Hospital in Boontown Township, New Jersey, he was 83 years of age.
