The following is from Peter Kostoulakos, ISA ? Fine Art Consultant

Arthur Prince Spear was born in Washington, DC on September 23, 1879 and died in Waban, MA in 1959. A painter and illustrator, Spear specialized in genre, fantasy scenes, landscapes, coastal scenes, portraits and nymphs in both oils and watercolors.

His formal art education began at the Art Student's League in New York from 1899-1902. He also studied at the Academy Julian in Paris from 1902-1907; George Washington University; and was a pupil of Jean Paul Laurens (1838-1921) in Paris.

Spear settled in Boston in 1907 and taught life drawing at the Fenway School of Illustration. At this time he resided at 35 Winchester St. and 156 Winchester St. in Brookline, MA and had studios located at 11 Hamilton Place in 1908 and, by 1916, the Fenway Studios in Boston, MA.

From the 1930s on, Spear maintained a studio in his home and, after WWII, he moved to Waban, MA and summered in Friendship and Warren, ME.

Sometime after 1944, Spear stopped painting and destroyed much of his work.

He held memberships in the Boston Art Club; National Academy of Design, 1920; the St. Botolf's Club; the Allied Artists of America; the Guild of Boston Artists; and the Copley Society.
