Survey Artist for the Emory Expedition of the Mexican Boundary Survey, 1849-1857, Arthur Schott was first assistant surveyor under Emory and one of three artists enlisted to depict the Border Country landscape and its people from Texas west to Yuma, in what is now Arizona. The demand for the Survey arose after the Mexican-American War ended in 1848 and the acquisition by the United States of the Gadsden Purchase, which re-positioned the Mexican boundary and gave much land to Texas.
