Biography from Birmingham Museum of Art:
| Arthur's full name was Arthur Walter Stewart, Jr. He was born in Marion, Alabama, and attended the Marion Military Institute. After graduating in 1935, he continued his studies at Auburn University and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where he had his first exhibition in 1938.
He lived in San Francisco from 1947 to 1952, which is where his Social Security card was issued. In 1952, he settled permanently in Birmingham. |
