This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Born in New Hampshire in 1832. A recent widow, Augusta Sweetland opened a studio in San Francisco in 1875 at 120 Sutter Street. Her neighbor there was James M. Hutchings, journalist and founder of the famed lIlustrated California Magazine. A romance blossomed and they married in the summer of 1880. Her husband had a rustic log cabin in Yosemite where the newlyweds settled. The cabin, at the foot of Yosemite Falls, soon was transformed by the happy bride into “a home of such charm and beauty that those who entered it never forgot it.” Their marriage was to last a little more than a year. Mrs. Hutchings died there on Nov. 6, 1881. Working in oil and watercolor, she is known to have painted landscapes, portraits, and marines; however, her works are rare. Exh: Calif. State Fair, 1860. In: Yosemite Nat'l Park Museum.
