This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Courtesy of Frank Wright, artist and Professor of Drawing and Graphics at George Washington University, Washington, DC:

Ben Summerford was born on February 3, 1924 in Montgomery, Alabama. He attended the Birmingham Southern College where he studied piano at the Birmingham Conservatory of Music. In the years 1943-46 Summerford served as an ensign in the United States Navy. It was in 1946, inspired by a visit to the Museum of Modern Art in New York that he decided to abandon music in favor of painting, and subsequently moved to Washington to study painting at the American University with Sarah Baker, Robert Gates and William Calfee. He also studied with Jack Tworkov and Karl Knaths who was a guest instructor at the Phillips Gallery Art School.

After winning a Fulbright fellowship in 1949, he traveled to Paris and studied painting at L'Ecole Des Beaux Arts for one year. Upon his return to Washington, he began to teach at the American University.

Works in Public Collections:
1. The Phillips Collection, Washington, DC
