A born Virginian, Betsy Dillard Stroud began painting with a private tutor at the age of eight, when an insightful uncle gave her a set of oil paints. She has a B. A. in art from Radford University and an M. A. in art history from the University of Virginia, where she was the first woman in the graduate Arts program. She was also the first woman in the doctoral program. She completed all course work and her orals (field examination) for her doctorate, when her uncle, Colonel Herbert Nash Dillard died while teaching class at the Virginia Military Institute.
After her uncle's death, Stroud devoted the next few years to writing a memoir about him, and the publication of this book changed her life. Through the book, she met and married a Texan and became a full-time painter. She is a signature member of the American Watercolor Society in New York, where she has won both a High Winds Medal and the Artists magazine Award, the National Watercolor Society and the Rocky Mountain National Watermedia Honor Society.
Presently, the artist resides in Scottsdale, Arizona, where life changes brought her in 1996. Stroud became a Dolphin Fellow in the American Watercolor Society in New York with her recent award and medal: the Mary S. Litt Memorial Award and Medal in May, 2004. for 2004-5, Stroud became president of Park Central Toastmasters in Phoenix, Arizona.
Also a professional writer, she served as Associate Editor of North America for "International Artist Magazine" located in Australia (1998-2001. For the last sixteen years, she has written articles for many magazines and is at present a contributing editor to "Watercolor Magic," and author of articles on creativity that appear quarterly in "Watercolor Magic." Her most recent award was "Best of Show" (October, 2002) for "Works on Paper" at the Prescott Center for the Arts in Prescott, AZ. Her recent book is "Painting from the Inside Out," published by Northlight in 2002. She is a highly respected workshop instructor and juror. She teaches workshops and judges shows across the country.
