Saul and grew up in Bartlesville, Oklahoma.  He attended high school at Bacone College in Bacone, Oklahoma.

He served in the Army during World War II , and in 1948, earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree at the University of Oklahoma, and an M.F.A. the following year.  From 1951 to 1952, he studied at the Art Students League in New York City.
