Born in Marysville, CA on August 28, 1859, Charles Sampson was the son
of one of the four founders of Marysville and an amateur landscape
painter. Orphaned at an early age, the younger Sampson went to
sea at age 15.
About 1880 he studied art in San Francisco at the School of Design and
again in 1910-11. For 25 years he supported his wife and 7
children by painting large nudes for the local barrooms. The
nudes were often veiled and signed with the initials "C.C (showing 500 of 763 characters). |
