Biography from The John Stewart Gallery:
Please note: Artists not classified as American in our database may have limited biographical data compared to the extensive information about American artists.

CHARLES WALLER SHAYER (British 1826 - 1914) was one of a well-known family of landscape painters. a famous and well traveled British painter, who was known for his wonderful large wooded landscape and genre paintings. Shayer is a well-listed artist with many of his works in the hands of rich collectors and museums across the world.
During the Victorian period, one of the most sought-after subjects was landscape, as many of the newly wealthy patrons of art, to escape the growing population in the cities, indulged and enjoyed various country pursuits. Many who made their fortunes in the new manufacturing industries that began during the Victorian era suddenly had the means to follow new interests that until then had been the privileges of the landed gentry.

Charles Shayer was a painter of genre and animals, who was quite active between 1870 and 1879, and like many artists of that period, worked with Charles Pettafor (1862 - 1900) the painter of the background and landscape in various paintings. This was a method of working common to many artists at this time, (the 19th Century Belgian artist Eugene Verbockoven is well-known for using this method of painting), as each artist would then excel at his specific subject, thus ensuring the finest quality work for his demanding and knowledgeable patrons.
