From his studio in Caldwell, Texas, he creates bronze sculptures of waterfowl and also wildlife fountains.
Smith learned the art of woodcarving from his grandfather as a child in Montana. While in college at Montana State University he and his brother, Geoffrey, would carve wooden duck decoys. He felt limited by the medium and decided to try working in bronze.
