Biography from Southwest Gallery:
Painting since 1972, Dennis Schmidt worked as a welder and machinist from 1966 to 1976 when he left to embark on his full-time career as a painter.  From 1979 to 1990, he also did numerous limited edition prints of his work. In his 28 years as a professional artist, Mr. Schmidt is the recipient of many awards.  Among these are numerous Best of Show, Gold and Silver Medals, eight consecutive popular choice awards at the Texas Ranges Hall of Fame as well as several Artist awards from his peers.

From 1984 to 1990, Dennis Schmidt served as Vice President of the Texas Association of Professional Artists. He was referenced in the book "Contemporary Western Artists" by Peggy anc Harold Samuels and has been interviewed for numerous publications including feature articles in "Southwest Art Magazine" and "State of the Art."  In 1978, Schmidt was the first artist ever honored with a one-man show at the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame; prior to 1978 they were all multi-artist events.  Born in 1950, Dennis Schmidt is a native of Texas living in Austin since 1988.

He participates in the Annual Cheyenne Frontier Days Governor's Invitational as well as the Great American Artist's Exhibition and Sale in Terrace Park Cincinnati, OH; the Gilcrease Museum Miniatures Show in Tulsa, OK; the Settlers West Gallery Miniatures Show in Tucson, AZ; Mountain Oyster Club Show in Tucson, AZ and the Museum of Western Art Annual Roundup in Kerrville, TX.

Biography from Southwest Gallery:
Artist statement:

"Some are born with a passion, a calling, or a lust for life if you will.  Perhaps that passion is a need or a void.  Some may describe it as a blessing or a curse, though whatever it is, the beholder of that sensation is often drawn beyond their control to seek a sense of fulfillment, which only the pursuit of that endeavor can provide.  I don't personally believe in talent, I was not born with talent, but, possibly something even better, an overwhelming passion to create and a very stubborn will to express my
feelings.  I need a pencil in my hand and a way to reflect my awe for all of life's miracles as surely as I need to breathe.  In developing the skills to reflect that awe, I sought and continue to seek a communion with my perceptions of God; however, the skills were not given to me.  The gift was and is a need to know and experience an ongoing working relationship with creation.  The primary goal in my work is to capture the awe-inspiring spirit of our world with honesty, respect and dignity and share that with others, hopefully conveying to them the irresistible passion I'm often fortunate enough to experience in the process."
