Biography from AskART:
Dorothy Stewart, known for her New Mexico subjects in styles ranging from realist to abstract, grew up in affluent circumstances in Philadelphia. At age 17, she traveled around the world with her mother, and then she enrolled in the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts where she was a student of Henry McCarter.

In 1925, she began a thirty-year residency in Santa Fe, and her home, Galeria Mexicana, was a center of cultural activities. She exhibited watercolors, drawings, and block prints of Native Americans and Hispanics at the Museum of New Mexico and took part in an exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. She also painted murals and did illustrations for abridged versions of Shakespeare's writings.

She traveled extensively, spending much time in Mexico.
