This biography from the Archives of AskART:
An artist known for her oil landscapes and pencil drawings and also for the meticulous care she took with each work, Eda St. John Smitten was born in San Francisco. In 1876, she married Lewis Workman Smitten, who was an artist, and they had a son. After their son was raised, she turned seriously to an art career and studied at the California School of Design and also with Lorenzo Latimer and William Burgess. She lived in San Francisco until 1903 and then moved to Berkeley, where she died on November 16, 1914.

Among the titles of her landscapes are "Queenly Tamalpais", "On Eel River", "Across Berkeley Hills" and "Down on the Truckee". She did a series of botanical drawings, which are in the possession of family members. According to a great, great granddaughter, Ann Johnson, Eda Smitten kept a book "that appeared to have doubled as her diary, filled with handwritten poems and clippings from magazines she must have liked." From the 1895 trip to Hawaii with her husband, a civil engineer who built one of the first roads on Oahu (it may have been the first), Smitten also wrote an article and did paintings.

Exhibition venues included the San Francisco Art Association, the Berkeley Art Association and the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition. At the time of her death, unfinished landscapes of Berkeley and Claremont were on her easel.
