Biography from The Heritage Society:
| Edward Muegge (Buck) Schiwetz was born in Cuero, Texas in 1898. He received his B.S. in architecture from Texas A&M. As a young man he worked as an architect's apprentice and also in commercial advertising. He married Ruby Lee Sanders (also an artist) in 1926. The couple moved to Houston in 1927, and Schiwetz set up a free-lance office.
His architectural sketches soon garnered much praise, both locally and internationally. Schiwetz worked with both Anderson-Clayton and Humble Oil & Refining Co. The Company put him on historical assignments for their Texas Sketchbook.
Schiwetz' style leaned more and more in the direction of art; he enjoyed painting ships, oil derricks, cotton gins, churches, and houses. He rendered service to history by painting historic houses and encouraging people to preserve them. "I have a field of my own," said Schiwetz, "that of architectural and historical art..."
For over 50years, Buck Schiwetz painted Texas scenes and structures. He worked with lithographs, watercolors, pencil sketches, oils, and etchings. Schiwetz exhibited in New York, Philadelphia and New Orleans. In 1934, he won a prize from the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, for most outstanding collection of watercolors. Schiwetz was also president of the Associated Artists of Houston.
His work is represented in major museums and appears in five or more books and two print portfolios. He was voted Texas State Artist in 1977-78. "The vision of Buck Schiwetz is uncomplicated: he draws and paints the country he loves with ease and directness, seeing it just as it is."(John Palmer Leeper 1981) |
