This biography from the Archives of AskART:

The following information was submitted in May of 2006 by Terry Carpenter:

"Edwin B. Smith, portraitist and historical painter... must have traveled extensively in search of commissions, for he is known to have worked in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1815; to have been located in Troy, Ohio, in 1832; and to have moved on to New Orleans, the Crescent City, in 1841."

Source: Robert Bishop: Folk Painters of America (E. P. Dutton, New York, 1979), pp. 160, 164-165; including black & white illustrations of two portraits he painted of residents Clarke County, Georgia, c. 1827.
