| Born in Sutter Creek, CA on Jan. 2, 1877. Ella Tanner was educated in the public schools of Amador City and then graduated from the Sierra Normal College in Auburn. She studied art at the Crocker Art School in Sacramento, the Mark Hopkins Institute in San Francisco, and privately with R. Max Meyers. After marrying Zane P. Smith, she settled in Berkeley and maintained a studio in her home. In ill health for many years, she fatally shot herself at her home on April 21, 1918.
