Elmer (Al) Stanhope was a prominent Western artist and one of the founders of Hayward Art Association. He began the study of art with John M. Cox of the Chicago Art Institute and later studied with Charles Horton and majored in art at the San Jose State College.
Exhibitions of Stanhope's works, which included oil, watercolor, and graphic art, have been held at the Palace of the Legion of Honor, San Francisco; the California State Fair and Alameda County Fair, where in 1948, he won first p (showing 500 of 1882 characters). |
