Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Emma Sangernebo became a noted
portrait and still-life painter in Indiana, living both in Indianapolis
and Brightwood. She also did architecure sculpture, having been
trained first by her husband Alexander Sangernebo, chief sculptor of
the Indianapolis
Terra Cotta Company who had emigrated from Russia to Indiana in the
1880s. Rudlof Schwarz also gave her sculpture lessons.
