Esther Sage is primarily known as Hetty Sage Benbridge
|
|
|
A painter of miniatures, little is known about Hetty Benbridge except
that she was the wife of Henry Benbridge, portrait painter of
Philadelphia and later of Charleston, South Carolina. She joined
him there in 1773 with their baby son, and from that time she is not
mentioned, causing historians to think she died shortly after her
arrival there.
Only ten miniatures by her have been found, all
done before the Revolution and unsigned. She is mentioned in the
autobiography (showing 500 of 1033 characters). |
