He came to New York City August 12, 1853, and was active as a portrait painter in the 1850s, painting portraits in Richmond, Virginia around 1859 returning to New York City around 1860.
The 1860 census states that he resided in New York with his wife and three children (ages 2 to 6, all born in the U.S.) and owned $6,000 worth of real estate.
