This biography from the Archives of AskART:
There is a photograph of Francis W. Swain on the front page of the San Francisco Chronicle, on February 13, 1919. In the accompanying article, he and twenty-four other American Army camouflage artists are described as having just returned the evening before from the battlefield in France. The headline reads: "S.F. SOLDIER ARTISTS BACK FROM FRONT. Detachment of Camoufleurs From 20th Engineers Return to City."

Swain is cited as "a well-known art student of San Francisco before he joined the camouflage section."

Submitted by Roy R. Behrens, author of Camoupedia: A Compendium of Research on Art, Architecture and Camouflage (2009).
