| | Born in Illinois in 1869. Severance led a peripatetic life. He was in Los Angeles in 1894 and soon moved to San Francisco where he was a pupil of John W. Clawson. He was in Somers, OH in 1900 then worked briefly in St Louis, MO before returning to California. By 1903 he was a resident of Berkeley; by 1908 he was back in Los Angeles where he remained through 1920.
