| Frederick Schauchardt Samuels was born in New York on July 10, 1855. Samuels settled in San Francisco in 1880. Following the earthquake of 1906, he moved across the bay to Oakland. As the manager of a large shipping firm, his business often took him to the islands of the Pacific where he painted marines in his leisure. He died in Oakland, CA on Nov. 23, 1930.
