This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Fritz Schwaderer (1901-1974 )

He was born in Darmstadt, Germany, in 1901.

From 1920-24 he studied at the Academy in Berlin and later came under the influence of Karl Hofer.

1928 German Art Exhibition, Berlin

1933 Mural Commission, Bombay, India

1946 Exhibited with German Expressionists (Nolde, Schmidt-Rotluff, Beckmann, Nay, Winter, Kandinsky, Jawlensky, Muenter, etc.) in "new
German Painters" exhibition under the auspices of the French military government

1947 Great German Art Exhibition, Mainz

1960 Represented Germany in the United Nations International Exhibition, New York, along with Muenter and Winter

Schwaderer became an American citizen and lived in Southern California.  His work is represented in collections throughout the world, including the Joseph H. Hirshhorn Collection in New York and the Ala Story Collection in California.

He became quite ill in 1964 but recovered.

From a 1964 brochure for an October-November exhibition of recent oil paintings by Fritz Schwaderer for the Palm Springs Desert Museum (now Palm Springs Art Museum) in co-operation with the Ankrum Gallery, Los Angeles, compiled and submitted by Janet Wullner-Faiss, Museologist (ret'd).

This biography from the Archives of AskART:
"Fritz Schwaderer was born December 27, 1901 and died April 22, 1974.  He was a German-born American abstract expressionist.  In 1937 he emigrated from Germany to California to get away from Hitler, with whom he violently disagreed.  He painted with Hans Burkhardt and Arshile Gorky sometime around 1937.

Working independently in Los Angeles, Schwaderer's experimental investigative approach anticipated the development of abstract expressionist art in New York from the school of Hans and Maria Hoffman.  His unique role as an important American painter is affirmed by the constant interest in his work.  Schwaderer's paintings were destroyed by Hitler; none of his paintings prior to his emigration from Germany have survived, yet his output in the U.S. from 1940 to 1974 reconstructed his reputation as one of the most important painters of the German Expressionist Movement."
