Born in Winterset, Iowa on October 5, 1897. Following service in World War I, Stout was educated at the University of Iowa, Harvard University, and abroad.
He was a restorer for the Fogg Museum at Harvard and Gardner Museum in Boston until 1947. He then was director of the Worcester (MA) Museum until 1954 and then spent 16 years as the director of the Gardner Museum. He wrote articles on the conservation of paintings and authored two books, Painting Materia (showing 500 of 958 characters). |
