This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Born in Jersey City Heights, New Jersey on August 30, 1860, Sherriff came from New York to California in 1904 and settled in Pasadena.   He was active there until Oct. 14, 1934 when he died of asphyxiation from a gas heater.

During his 30 years in southern California he made many painting excursions to the deserts of the Coachella Valley and Palm Springs environs to capture the serenity of those uninhabited areas.
