A painter, sculptor, illustrator and educator, Gordon Samstag was born in New York City, where he studied at the National Academy of Design* and the Art Students League*. He also studied with Charles Hawthorne at Provincetown, and was in Paris where he enrolled in the Academie Colarossi.*
During the 1930s, Samstag was a WPA* artist for the Federal Art Project*, and from this period, his painting of a black cleaning woman, Proletarian, is in the collection of the Toledo Art M (showing 500 of 5164 characters). |
