This biography from the Archives of AskART:
From family records:

"Harwood Steiger was born in Macedon, New York in 1900.  His early years were spent there and in Fairport, New York where his family moved to.

Mr. Steiger's art eduction was at Mechanics Institute, Rochester N.Y. and at the Academy of Fine Arts, Philadelphia, PA.  He also attended summer school at Westchester and East End Art School at Provincetown.  He was a member of the Pennsylvania Academy of Arts.  He taught art at Oswego Training School, Mechanics Institute of Rochester, the State Continuation School and at the YMCA dept of art, at the Central School of Business and the Art School of the Rochester Atheaneum.

In the late 20's Mr. Steiger built a studio in a desolate part of Nova Scotia on the Bay of Fundy and near Parker's Cove and spent many summers there drawing and painting. The studio was built in 15 days utilizing all local habitants of that area.

In 1934 he was on a radio show in New York city lecturing on landscape and still life painting.  After moving to New York City Mr. Steiger taught watercolor and tempera at his studio on West 4th Street during the winter months and at his summer school of art at Edgartown, Martha's Vineyard, Mass.

Other activities of Mr. Steiger included being selected to design the Chinese Government exhibit at the Sesquentennial Exposition at Philadelphia, was sponsored for  a year at Maitland Florida Research Center and later did some work for the Navy.

After his marriage to one of his former summer students, they settled at a farm near Red Hook, N.Y. where they were avid gardeners. From 1954 to 1955 they spent time in Alamos, Mexico where they worked on fabric design and in 1956 settled in Tubac, Arizona where they opened up a speciality fabric shop creating fabrics on a large scale. They returned to Red Hook for the summers and to Tubac in the winters.  Harwood died in Tucson in 1980 and was buried in Rhinebeck, N.Y."
