The following, submitted April 2004, is from the artist.
Helen Fabi Smagorinsky was born in Rochester, New York on December 24, 1933. Though lacking formal training Smagorinsky painted as a young girl. After a career as an elementary school teacher and once her children were old enough to allow her the time, she began to paint again. Her first compositions were on old boards and boxes and mostly winter scenes because it took some time to learn how to mix decent greens.
