| Helen Moore Sewell was born in Mare Island, CA on June 27, 1896, the daughter of a naval officer. Orphaned in 1904, Sewell spent her childhood in Brooklyn, New York. At age 12 she began studying art at the Pratt Institute, and by the 1920s she was illustrating children’s books. After a long illness, she died in New York City on February 24, 1957.
