This biography from the Archives of AskART:
H[enry] L. Stephens 1824-1882 was primarily an illustrator of political satire and childrens' books and journals. He was employed by Frank Leslie and then Harper and Brothers, and he was the founding artist of Vanity Fair (12/31/59).

Other works include: " The Comic Natural History of the Human Race" (Phila); "Punchinello" (1870 NYC) a satirical journal. Children s books illustrated include: Aesops Fables; Death of Cock Robin; The House that Jack Built, and others. His illustrations also appeared in the Riverside Magazine and the St. Nicholas volumes. He was "also known as a watercolor artist producing many large works, which he occupied his spare moments painting."
