| | Born in Pennsylvania about 1815. Stellwagon entered the U.S. Navy in 1833 and sailed to the Caribbean Islands. While on a tour of duty, he sailed around the Horn in 1849 and spent about a year in San Francisco. While there, he painted several watercolors of the San Francisco Bay area and Sacramento. In 1856 he was a member of the Coast Survey in the Nantucket Shoals area.
