Biography from Springville Museum of Art:
Henry Squires was born in Putney, Surrey, England in 1850.  He was a self-taught painter of landscapes.  He died in Salt Lake City in 1928.

Squires came to Salt Lake as an infant with his family who were converts to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  His father was a barber and a friend and an advisor to president of The Church, Brigham Young.

Although he graduated from the University of Deseret in 1870, Squires was primarily self-taught.  He was a friend of Harry L.A. Culmer and Alfred Lambourne, two early Utah painters, but his work was more primitive.

Echo Lake (1886) and Artist's Lake, Big Cottonwood (1886), and Winter Landscape, all painted in the Utah mountains are examples of his work.

Henry Squires and his nephew Lawrence traveled to Mexico, Montreal, Europe, and New York visiting art galleries absorbing the work of the Old Masters.
