| The following biography is submitted by Gary Stanley of San Diego: Source is Edan Hughes, "Artists in California, 1786-1940" Herbert Henry Smithers (1871-1960) was born in London, England on June 6, 1871. He moved to the United States in 1880 with his family. Primarily self taught, he had several painting lessons in Chicago with Edgar Cameron and others. During his early years he had studios in Buffalo (NY), Chicago, and Racine (Wisconsin). While in Chicago he was a member of, and exhibited with, the Chicago Society of Artists. Smithers had several occupations during his working career. He was a sign and steeple painter for a period of time, as well as a shoe salesman. He painted extensively in New England, Canada, and the Midwest. In 1920 he made his first trip to California, but and moved there permanently until 1952. He had a studio in Hollywood for a brief time. Shortly afterwards he moved to San Diego, where he lived out his remaining years.
Smithers was a recluse, and died in a San Diego Hotel on October 23, 1960. He painted extensively in watercolors, as well as oils. His subjects included the California coastlines, foothills, and mountains. Source: Edan Milton Hughes
