This biography from the Archives of AskART:
| Herman E. Schnabel was born in Germany in 1841. Schnabel immigrated to St Louis, MO as an infant. He was living in Chicago in 1880 and active in San Francisco from the 1880s. He studied there at the School of Design. Although rare, his landscapes include scenes of the Mendocino coast. Before the turn of the century, he returned to to Bertchesgaden, Germany.
Exhibited: SFAA, 1888-1905; Mechanics' Inst. (SF), 1889.
Works Held: Camron-Stanford House (Oakland).
