| Born in Bad Ems, Germany on Feb. 21, 1872, the son of Hermann Joachim Schmitt. While in his teens, Schmitt worked in his father's woodworking shop in Bad Ems. In 1892 he immigrated to Philadelphia where he established a cuckoo clock factory. In 1903 he and his family settled in San Francisco. As a woodcarver, he provided frames for artist William Keith, did the Council Chambers at the SF City Hall, as well as architectural adornments at the Palace Hotel Garden Court and Orpheum Theater.
