This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Born at Muelben, Baden, Germany on March 31, 1846. Schmitt was appointed woodcarver to Kaiser Wilhelm I in 1871 at his summer residence at Bad Ems. After 20 years service with the royal family, Schmitt and his family immigrated to the U.S. in 1892. Settling in Ewansville, NJ (outskirts of Philadelphia), he operated the Maple Lane Cottage until 1920. In that year the Schmitt family moved to California and settled in Fruitvale near Oakland. He worked with his son on several projects including the Hearst home in Sunol. Schmitt died in Oakland on Sept. 26, 1924.
