Biography from Dixon-Hall Fine Art:
Hobart D. Stitt was Born in Hot Springs, Arkansas, and studied at the St. Louis Academy of Fine Art, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and in Paris. Among his teachers were Fred Wagner, Robert Spencer and Howard Pyle. Stitt lived in Pikesville, Maryland and specialized in landscapes and equestrian subjects.

Stitt exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (1922 and 1925) Mill and Barn and Still Life, at the National Academy of Design in New York (1924 and 1925) Spring Blossoms and Springtime and at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1925.

Along with Clifford W. Ashley, Stitt was given an exhibit at the Delaware Art Museum (October 21-November 1, 1924).

His work is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Delaware Art Museum, the Little Rock Art Museum, and Princeton University.

Information from Schoonover Studios in Wilmington, Delaware on students of Howard Pyle reveals that Stitt did not consider himself an illustrator and the work he did (over 200 illustrations and covers for magazines such as “People’s magazine”, “Top Notch”, “Adventure”, “Romance”, and the “Du Pont Magazine” was done solely to make a living.  As an easel painter, he prided himself on the paintings of such famous horses as “Man O’ War” and “Blockade.”
